I use iPhoto to organize my pictures. And have been looking for a solution to backup them in the cloud. Since SkyDrive offers 25GB free, I wanted to give it a chance. With Windows Live Gallery, you can upload one folder at a time and you’ll have to rename the folder on each upload. Since I have very many pictures I wanted to find a way to upload the entire folder structure at once.
So what I first did was to export the photos from my iPhoto Library using iPhoto to JAlbum Exporter. This preserves the right folder names by iphoto event name. Exactly what I wanted! It’s also possible to open the iPhoto Library Package in Finder and then go to the originals folder. But here all photos are just stored by import date.
No when you got all photos to a temp folder you must use Gladinet to bulk upload all images to your skydrive account. Since this is only available in windows I run this from my virtual windows 7. When using Parallels Desktop as I do you got the OS X drive mounted so you could easally find your temp folder and copy files over to your skydrive. The free version of Gladinet only supports 1000 files at a time for each thread (drag n drop), but fortunately you can start as many threads as you like.
I uploaded all my images to Skydrive-> My images -> Year -> Event. I thought it would be possible to set individual permission to any event folder for sharing an event to a friend to have comments etc. But permissions have to be set to the root level folder. So then I have to share all “my images”. Not a good thing!
A solution would be to move all my events to root level and have them named year – event. But that requires more manual work and I lose browsing overview. So please give me individual folder permissions now!
From the beginning I just wanted to have a secure backup for my pictures and hopefully you get that with skydrive. If an accident should occur locally, and my images would disappear, I can easily choose to download the folder “My Image” as one big zip file. But I also get a lot of features when having my images online. Like watching them throw the Messenger application on my iPhone.
IPlenty of space left after all my images are uploaded.
